About 7thGeneration

We have t-shirt designs that are based on our perspectives and experience of First Nations culture. Mainly Ojibwe language, humour, misunderstandings and stereotypes.

We called the design series 7thGeneration or 7thGen for short. 7thGeneration is a native philosophy that every decision made in our life will affect the next 7 generations to come. It was also prophesied after the first contact with colonists that the seventh generation would come to a crossroad. We learnt about the 7th Generation prophecy in the book “Shaking the Rattle: Healing the Trauma of Colonization” by Barbara-Helen Hill.

The first design idea came from a conversation we found ourselves having fairly often of the struggles of Indigenous people having to live in what seemed to be two separate worlds, the world of spirituality and ceremonies founded in respect and the world of institutions, monetary means and black and white rules. We then continued to create designs whenever ideas came to us often through conversations. Me being a Graphic Designer and Lynne being a social wizard we refined the ideas for t-shirt presentation for ourselves mainly and for anyone who enjoys our designs too.

We started putting ideas on t-shirts in 2016 on Aboriginal Day and we continued to add ideas as we go.

Lynne and I live in Temiskaming Shores in Northern Ontario, in a small city close to the Quebec border. And the shared traditional territory of the Algonquin and Ojibwe peoples.

I’m Andrea, a graphic artist, animal lover, snowboarder, mushroom forager. I’m from North Bay, Ontario. Lynne is an Ojibwe Kwe from Matachewan First Nation, she is a sociologist, hockey player, and outdoor enthusiast. We’ve been a couple since 2014 and have lived in Temiskaming since 2015. We are passionate about Indigenous Culture and its teachings and attempt to live the best lives that we can keep in mind for the 7 generations to come and reducing our footprint here on Mother Earth.
